Every Defect Has a Production Cost, Not Just a Quality Label

From a production standpoint, the more important question is different: once a defect is found, how much time, labour, and material does fixing (or scrapping) it actually cost the line?

Rework vs. Rejection

Rework

The garment can be corrected — a seam re-sewn, a stain removed — and returns to the flow after the fix. Costs extra time and labour, but the garment is saved.

Rejection

The garment cannot be economically corrected and is scrapped entirely — the fabric, trims, and all labour already spent on it are a total loss.

Why Tracking the Rate Matters More Than Tracking Individual Pieces

A rework/rejection rate tracked daily, by operation and by cause, turns scattered incidents into a pattern — showing exactly which operation, machine, or shift is generating the most loss. This is what lets a factory fix a root cause (a worn machine part, an undertrained operator) instead of just repeatedly fixing the same symptom, garment after garment.
