No single sewing machine can do every job well. A line typically mixes several machine types, each built around one stitch mechanism, and each workstation is set up with whichever machine matches its assigned operation. One needle, one bobbin thread, interlocking inside the fabric (stitch class 301). The most widely used machine for general seaming.
Trims the raw edge and encases it in thread in one pass, using 3–5 threads. The standard for knit side seams and edge finishing.
Produces a flat, non-bulky seam, common for hemming sleeves and hems on knitwear, and for decorative flat seams on activewear.
Two or three needles create parallel rows on top with a looper thread underneath — the standard hem finish on t-shirts and stretch garments.
Forms a looped chain stitch that stretches well — used for decorative stitching and on some stretch-seam applications.
A specialised machine that cuts and finishes a buttonhole in one automated cycle, at a consistent size and density.
Automatically sews on a button and trims the thread, adjustable for different button sizes and thread wrap counts.
Sews a small, dense reinforcement block at stress points — pocket corners, belt loops, fly openings.
A cylindrical bed lets tubular pieces (sleeves, trouser legs) pass over the arm — used for sewing seams in tight, enclosed shapes.
Follows a digitised design file to stitch logos or patterns directly into the fabric with thread.
Not a sewing machine at all — heat and pressure bond interlining to fabric, giving collars, cuffs, and plackets their structure before sewing.
Choosing the wrong machine for an operation is a common, avoidable cause of quality problems — a lockstitch seam on a stretch waistband will snap the first time it's pulled, where a chainstitch or coverstitch would flex with the fabric instead.
