Why Fabric Is Cut in Stacks, Not One Layer at a Time

Spreading is the process of unrolling fabric onto a long cutting table in multiple layers (plies), stacked one on top of another, so the cutting machine can cut through the whole stack at once. Cutting garments one layer at a time simply wouldn't be fast enough for bulk orders — a single spread can hold anywhere from a handful of layers up to 100–200, depending on fabric thickness and the cutting equipment.

The Two Decisions Every Spread Has to Make

Getting the nap direction wrong on a fabric that needs it is a serious, expensive mistake — it means visibly mismatched panels on the finished garment, discovered only after cutting.

Common Lay Types

Single Ply

One layer only — used for sampling, not bulk production, since it wastes far more fabric per garment.

Multiple Ply

Many identical-length layers stacked together — the standard method for bulk cutting.

Stepped Lay

Groups of layers at different lengths within the same spread, used to combine several order quantities efficiently in one cut.

Good Spreading vs. Problem Spreading

Signs of Good Spreading

  • Correct nap/face direction chosen and followed consistently for the fabric type
  • Even, consistent tension across every layer, with no wrinkles or shifting
  • Ply height appropriate for the fabric's thickness and the cutting equipment

Signs of Problem Spreading

  • Nap direction mixed within one spread on a directional fabric
  • Uneven tension, causing panels to shift or distort once cut
  • Too many layers for the fabric type, leading to inaccurate cutting at the bottom of the stack
