Fabric fibres are hygroscopic — they absorb and release moisture from the surrounding air. A garment can pass every inspection and still arrive mouldy, musty, or stained if it sat in a poorly controlled warehouse, or travelled through a shipping container where trapped moisture condensed inside the sealed polybag.
As a sealed carton moves between different climates — a humid factory, a cool shipping container, a warm destination warehouse — temperature swings can push trapped moisture past its dew point, causing condensation inside the polybag itself. That trapped moisture is what leads to mould, mildew, and musty odours, sometimes discovered only when the buyer opens the carton.
Many textile storage facilities aim to keep relative humidity in a commonly cited range of roughly 50–60%, though the right target depends on the fibre, the climate, and how long goods will sit in storage — it isn't one fixed number for every warehouse.
Dehumidifiers in the finishing, packing, and carton storage areas keep humidity in the target range, with regular calibration to keep readings reliable.
Cartons are stacked off the floor and away from walls, with airflow between stacks, since stagnant, poorly ventilated corners are where humidity problems usually show up first.
Humidity is measured and logged in the packing/storage area, sometimes with desiccant packs added inside cartons for goods travelling through humid climates.
Goods arriving from a very different temperature or humidity condition (e.g. a cold truck in winter) are allowed to adjust before opening or moving them, to avoid triggering condensation.
Cartons showing any of these problem signs are normally quarantined and inspected separately, rather than mixed back into the rest of the shipment.
