A garment can pass every visual, measurement, and workmanship check and still fail on something invisible: a restricted chemical in the dye, print, or trim. This kind of failure is the most serious kind — it isn't about how the garment looks, it's about whether it's safe to wear, and it can trigger a recall, a customs hold, or a legal penalty in the destination market.

The Substances Most Commonly Restricted

Azo Dyes

Certain azo dyes can break down into aromatic amines linked to cancer risk. Widely restricted, especially in the EU, in bright reds, yellows, and blacks.

Heavy Metals

Lead, cadmium, and similar metals can show up in dyes, prints, or metal trims (zippers, rivets, buttons) — tightly limited, especially for children's wear.

Phthalates

Used to soften plastic prints, coatings, and sequins. Restricted because they're hormone disruptors — a common issue in rubbery screen-printed logos.

Formaldehyde

Sometimes used as a wrinkle-resistant or anti-mildew finish. Restricted because it can cause skin irritation and is a known carcinogen at higher levels.

PFAS ("Forever Chemicals")

Used in water-repellent or stain-resistant finishes. Increasingly restricted due to long-term environmental and health persistence.
