Why Colour Gets Checked So Carefully

A garment can be perfectly sewn and still get rejected over colour alone. Before a factory dyes thousands of metres of fabric, it first has to prove — on a small scale — that it can hit the buyer's exact shade.

That proof is called a lab dip: a small, dyed fabric swatch matched against the buyer's colour standard (a Pantone reference, a physical swatch, or an approved sample) and checked under standard lighting before bulk dyeing is allowed to start.

Colorfastness: Does the Colour Stay Put?

Colorfastness is tested separately from shade matching — a colour can look exactly right and still fail if it doesn't hold up to normal use. The main checks are:

Wash Fastness

Does the colour bleed, fade, or stain other garments after washing?

Rub Fastness

Does colour transfer onto skin or other fabric when rubbed, wet or dry?

Light Fastness

Does the colour fade after extended exposure to sunlight?

Good Colour Quality vs. Problem Colour

Signs of Good Colour Quality

  • Matches the approved lab dip under standard lighting
  • Consistent shade across all panels of the same garment
  • Colour stays put through washing, rubbing, and normal sunlight exposure

Signs of Problem Colour

  • Visible shade difference between rolls or between garment panels
  • Colour bleeds onto other fabric in the wash
  • Fading noticeably faster than the buyer's agreed rating

The exact tolerance for a shade match, and the minimum acceptable colorfastness rating, is agreed between buyer and factory per order — it varies by product type and end use, so there isn't one number that fits every garment.
