Knitting quality control is different from general fabric inspection in one key way: it happens online — while the circular or flat knitting machine is still running — not just after a finished roll comes off. Catching a problem here stops it from repeating across an entire roll, or across every roll on a mis-set machine.
An inspector doing rounds checks a sample of running machines against the style's approved knitting program, rather than waiting for the fabric inspection stage to find the same fault dozens of times over.
The machine's diameter and needle gauge (needles per inch) determine the fabric's finished width and stitch density — confirmed against the style's plan before production runs far.
The length of yarn in each knitted loop. Together with yarn count, this is the main factor controlling the fabric's final GSM — even a small stitch-length drift shifts GSM across the whole roll.
Every cone loaded onto the machine is checked to be the correct count, brand, and lot — mixing lots mid-roll is a common, avoidable cause of shade or texture inconsistency.
Knit fabric comes off the machine either as a tube (circular knit) or slit open into flat width — confirmed against what the style actually requires downstream.
For stretch fabrics, the lycra's brand, denier (thickness), and feed tension are checked — inconsistent lycra tension is a common cause of patchy stretch across a roll.
The knitting program loaded on the machine is checked against the approved program for that style, since a wrong or outdated program produces fabric that doesn't match the approved sample at all.
