How Is Measurement & Spec Checked on a Garment?

What a Point of Measure (POM) Actually Is

A Point of Measure (POM) is an exact, agreed spot on a garment where a measurement is taken — chest width, body length, sleeve length, and so on. Every POM has a defined method (where exactly to place the tape, whether the garment is measured flat, buttoned, or relaxed) so two different people measure it the same way.

All of a garment's POMs, together with their target sizes across the size range, make up the spec sheet (or size chart) — the single reference every inspector measures against.

Tolerance: Why "Exact" Isn't Realistic

No factory hits a measurement precisely on every single unit — fabric, cutting, and sewing all introduce small natural variation. That's why every POM has a tolerance: an acceptable plus/minus range around the target number.

For example, a chest width spec'd at 50 cm with a ±1 cm tolerance means anything from 49 cm to 51 cm passes. A garment measuring 52 cm would be flagged as out of tolerance. Tighter tolerances mean stricter quality control, but tolerance amounts vary by garment type, fabric stretch, and how critical that particular POM is — there's no single tolerance number that applies to every product.

  • Every POM falls within its agreed tolerance across the sampled pieces
  • Consistent results across different sizes in the same style
  • Measured using the exact method described in the spec sheet

Signs of Problem Measurements

  • A POM falls outside its tolerance on multiple pieces (not just one outlier)
  • Sizes overlap — e.g. a size Large sample measuring smaller than a size Medium
  • Measurements taken inconsistently (some garments measured stretched, others relaxed)

A single out-of-tolerance piece is usually treated as an isolated defect; the same POM failing across many pieces points to a pattern or cutting problem affecting the whole run.
