Why Is Needle & Metal Detection Important?

A hidden risk you can't spot by eye — and the two-layer system factories use to catch it.

A Risk You Can't Always See

A sewing needle can snap during stitching, and the broken tip can end up hidden inside a seam, a lining, or a thick layer of fabric — invisible to the eye, but a real injury risk, especially for babies and young children. This is why needle and metal detection is treated as a safety issue first, and a quality issue second.

Two Layers of Control

Broken Needle Control (Prevention)

Factories keep a log of every needle issued and every needle broken. If a needle snaps, all broken pieces must be recovered and accounted for against the log — if any piece is missing, the affected garments are isolated and re-checked before they're allowed to continue.

Metal Detection (Final Check)

Even with good needle control, every finished garment is still passed through a metal detector before packing — usually 100% of production, not just a sample, since this is a safety check, not a statistical one.

Good Practice vs. Problem Practice

Signs of Good Practice

  • A complete, up-to-date broken needle log with every broken piece accounted for
  • 100% of garments passed through a calibrated metal detector before packing
  • Any garment that triggers the detector is set aside, investigated, and not shipped until resolved

Signs of Problem Practice

  • Broken needle pieces not fully recovered, with no follow-up investigation
  • Only a sample of garments run through the metal detector, instead of the full order
  • A detector that hasn't been calibrated recently, or is placed somewhere prone to interference

Because a missed needle is a safety failure, not just a cosmetic one, this is one of the few checkpoints where "close enough" is not treated as acceptable, regardless of the product category.
