Trims and accessories — buttons, zippers, snaps, elastic, labels, hangtags — are usually the smallest-cost items on a garment, but they cause a disproportionate share of complaints and, on children's wear, real safety incidents. A perfect fabric and perfect stitching won't save a garment with a zipper that jams or a button that falls off after two washes.
Because of this, trims get checked on two fronts: does it match what was approved, and does it actually hold up under use.
A steady pulling force is applied to buttons, bows, and other small attachments for a set time. If it detaches, it's flagged — this test matters most for children's wear, where a detached part is a choking hazard.
Zippers and snaps are opened and closed repeatedly (commonly 20–50 cycles) to confirm they keep working smoothly instead of sticking or breaking.
Care, fibre-content, size, brand, and country-of-origin labels are checked for correct wording, correct symbols for the destination market, legibility, and secure attachment.
Trims are checked for shade match to the approved sample, and sewing threads/trims are tested against white fabric to catch colour bleeding during washing.
The pull test isn't one generic check — different attachment types are pulled with different force levels and durations, and each is logged as a pass/fail record:
Checks sewn-on and shank buttons detach only under force well beyond normal handling.
Confirms snap fasteners stay attached and don't pop open or separate from the fabric under pull.
Checks metal rivets (common on denim) don't pull loose from the fabric they're set into.
Confirms eyelets (used for laces, drawcords, or decoration) stay firmly set in the fabric.
On children's wear, every one of these tests is treated as a safety requirement, not just a quality preference — a detached small part is a choking hazard, so pull test machines are themselves calibrated regularly, and every test result is kept on record.
On children's wear especially, a failed trim safety test is usually treated as a critical defect — not a minor cosmetic one — regardless of how small the part looks.
