Yarn is the continuous strand of twisted fibre — cotton, polyester, or a blend — that gets knitted or woven into fabric. It is the very first building block of a garment, which means any weakness in the yarn eventually shows up in the finished fabric.
A buyer or QC person doesn't need to be a spinning-mill engineer, but knowing the basic quality points helps explain why some fabric batches come out patchy, weak, or uneven — the root cause is often in the yarn, not the weaving or knitting itself.
How thick or fine the yarn is. It decides how heavy or light, and how coarse or smooth, the finished fabric will feel.
How much force the yarn can take before it snaps. Weak yarn breaks during knitting, weaving, or later everyday wear.
How consistent the yarn's thickness is along its length. Uneven yarn is the single biggest cause of patchy, streaky-looking fabric.
How tightly the fibres are wound together. Twist level affects strength, softness, and how the fabric surface will look and feel.
Loose fibre ends sticking out of the yarn body. High hairiness tends to cause pilling and a fuzzy look on the finished fabric.

Mills do measure yarn scientifically — count, strength, and evenness are all tested with standard lab equipment, and results are compared against published industry benchmarks. But the exact acceptable range depends on the fibre type, the yarn count, and what the fabric will be used for, so there is no single number that applies to every order. A buyer's technical team or a testing lab report is the right place to confirm requirements for a specific product.
